Looking Ahead to the 2019 Gardening Season
Before the frenzy of the winter holidays is upon us, now would be a good time to begin preparing for the 2019 gardening season.
There are several steps to take when planning for next year’s garden. Be sure you’re on the lists to receive copies of the new 2019 seed and plant catalogs, which will be mailed soon. These let you know about new and novel types of plants you might want to try next season.
The second step is to place orders as early as possible. Otherwise, you might end up disappointed if the seeds/plants you want are sold out.
A 2019 planner or garden journal is an invaluable gardening aid. I prefer the spiral bound weekly planners. There are a number of these that feature garden art, such as those by Marjolein Bastin and Debbie Mumm. After browsing the 2019 planners at my local Barnes and Nobles, I got the Linda Nelson Stocks planner because I’m a fan of her art.
Published by Lang, this planner has both a weekly and monthly planner as well as all sorts of pages for making notes. On the inside of the back cover, this has a pocket for storing notes, clippings, and the like.
One of the best ways to prepare for 2019 is to get a copy of the 2019 John Baer’s Agricultural Almanac and Gardener’s Guide, edited by Linda L. Weidman. It is illustrated with lovely historical sketches. A five year subscription is very convenient and will save you money and time.
This is the 194th edition of the almanac, which is published by John Baer’s Sons. It features weather predictions for all regions of the country for the end of 2018 and all of 2019. It also shows the signs of the zodiac, and the like.
The almanac presents fascinating articles not only on gardening topics but other subjects as well, such as those of historical interest, along with delicious recipes. There are handy tables and charts that tell when gardeners should plan or carry out various types of gardening chores, such as weeding.
There is even a fishing calendar as well. This almanac has something of interest for all readers, such as a weights and measures chart, and a handy mileage chart for distance from/to major cities along with the astronomical highlights for 2019. Gardeners will find fascinating articles on many gardening topics, including sunflowers, ferns, colchicums, naturalizing bulbs, hyacinths, and the Boxwood Society.
