Facebook Video Cover

Facebook Video Cover
Over a year ago, Facebook introduced a new feature that made animators very happy. It’s called the Facebook Video Cover. Yes, you can replace your still cover image at the top of your Facebook page with a moving video. It’s believed that animation or video gets more attention then static images. So, why not add that animated video cover to your Facebook page?

The Tech Specs

Unlike YouTube that uses the standard aspect ratio 16:9 widescreen, Facebook suggest that your video cover be 820x462 pixels and 20 to 90 seconds duration. Facebook also suggests the 1080p resolution and the .mp4 video file format.

How do you know if you can upload a video cover? Go to your Facebook page and place your mouse over the upper left corner. Click the Change Cover button. If you see “Choose from Videos” or “Upload Photo/Video” than you can use the Facebook Video Cover feature.

When you add a video, Facebook will generate 10 thumbnail images from your video but you can upload a custom thumbnail later. Also, your video will autoplay and auto loop when someone views your page. Sound is turned off by default but there is an icon at the bottom, which is visible on hover, that will toggle the sound on/off.

So what to put in your video? As long as your video stays within the Facebook terms of service, you are only limited by your own imagination. You might want to look to social media for some ideas. For example, there is the popular Cinemagraph, which is an image with just a small area animated. This would be great for businesses such as bars and restaurants, as you can show a beverage being poured into a glass or mug. If your product is an app or software, use a screencast of your product in use. This would also be great for templates, as you could show how easily your product is to customize. Don’t forget the popular behind-the-scenes video, which gives a personal face to your business. Finally, you could use motion graphics, such as an animated logo. Also don’t forget that you can animate text.

But you don’t need to reinvent the wheel. If you already have a video and a way to edit the video, you could resize and export the video file in the Facebook dimensions.

As with other video or motion graphics projects, there are several online sites for creating videos, such as Animation Wave, Animoto and Adobe Spark. Of course, if you want to do it yourself, you could use software that will export .mp4 video, such as Apple Motion, Screenflow and even Photoshop CC.

Note: At this time, the video cover feature is only available for your Facebook page and not yet available for your profile page.
